In the period November 28 – December 16, 2016 ROSATOM-CICE&T organized scientific visits of the  top and middle management of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BAPETEN) in the framework of practical arrangements with the IAEA and the implementation of the IAEA’s technical cooperation programme.  These activities were performed at the request of the Indonesian side and focused on the Russian experience in development of small and medium-sized reactors (SMR), including legislative and regulatory framework for their deploy.

The conducted scientific visits are a logical continuation of cooperation between ROSATOM-CICE&T and various organizations of the Republic of Indonesia including academia and  National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) that culminated in 2015 by signing MoU in in the sphere of research, education and training in nuclear science and technology in support of nuclear infrastructure and sustainable nuclear energy system development.

The SMRs are the field of special interest of Indonesian nuclear community. Indonesian specialists participated in the special training course on SVBR technology in 2013, training course on KLT-40 technology in 2015 that served to establishing the mechanism for providing course on SMRs on regular basis.

Within the scientific visits of 2016 the series of presentations from the leading organizations involved SMRs projects were arranged:  gas cooled SMRs were introduced by JSC “Afrikantov OKBM” and liquid metal cooled SMRs – by JSC “AKME-Engineering”.  Indonesian specialists had a technical tour to Scientific-Research and Methodology Center “Simulation Systems” (the developer of a simulator for SVBR-100 basic principles), full-scope simulator of Floating NPP used for training of operating personnel for Floating nuclear co-generation plant “Akademik Lomonosov” that is under construction now in St Petersburg.

BAPETEN specialists visited Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostechnadzor) (Russian Regulatory Body) on December 14, 2016 and had a meeting with Dr. Ferapontov (Deputy Chairman), Mr. Utenkov (Deputy Department Head – Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Protocol) and Mr. Alekhin (Deputy Head of the Department of Assessment, Licensing and Inspection of Civil Nuclear Marin Propulsion Systems).
